BALTFLOODS Brings Climate Learning Outdoors at Savitaipale Water Theme Day
31 August 2026
Around 80 students and teachers took part in a BALTFLOODS Climate Walk and Climate Bingo at the Kapakk’oja Constructed Wetland during the Water Theme Day organized by Savitaipale Upper Secondary School, an associated partner of the BALTFLOODS Project on August 31, 2026. The event brought together secondary school and upper secondary school students, teachers, and educators for a day of hands-on learning focused on nature-based solutions can help communities adapt to climate change.Â
As an associated partner in the BALTFLOODS Project, Savitaipale Upper Secondary School plays an important role in supporting project activities related to citizen engagement and the transfer of knowledge and solutions to schools, education centres, and local communities. The school will also utilize citizen engagement solutions developed within the project, helping bring climate and water-related topics closer to students and residents.Â
During the guided walk, students explored how wetlands function as nature’s own infrastructure. They learned how wetlands help store water, reduce flooding risks, improve water quality, provide habitats for plants and animals, and support biodiversity. Along the route, students were encouraged to observe their surroundings and consider how both natural systems and human-made infrastructure contribute to resilient communities. Â
To make the experience even more interactive, the Climate Walk was combined with a lively Climate Bingo activity. Students stopped at different locations to complete challenges, make observations, and discuss what they saw around them. The wetland quickly filled with enthusiasm as participants raced to complete their bingo cards, with excited calls of “BINGO!” echoing across the site. Â
The event also reflected Savitaipale Upper Secondary School’s long-standing commitment to water education. The school is actively involved in water research activities, and its curriculum includes a year-long interdisciplinary learning programme covering a wide range of water-related topics. The Water Theme Day provided an opportunity to connect those studies with real-world examples and practical climate solutions. Â
Organized in cooperation with the City of Lappeenranta, the Climate Walk was supported by Sanna Varis and Rozabela Singh, who helped guide discussions and engage students throughout the activities. Â
BALTFLOODS extends its sincere thanks to Savitaipale Upper Secondary School, participating students, teachers, and organizers for their enthusiasm and active participation. The day demonstrated how experiential learning can make complex topics such as climate adaptation, stormwater management, and biodiversity more engaging and accessible. Â
By bringing students out into nature and connecting them with real-world climate solutions, the event highlighted the value of education, collaboration, and citizen engagement in building more resilient communities for the future.
