APRIORA recognised as a Charter Action under the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters"
30 July 2026
We are proud to announce that APRIORA has been officially accepted as a recognised action under the Charter of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”, the European Union’s flagship mission to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems by 2030.
This recognition confirms that APRIORA’s work on risk-based prioritisation of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) upgrades directly supports the Mission’s core objectives:
- Protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030
- Preventing and eliminating pollution of Europe’s ocean, seas and waters, in line with the EU Action Plan Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil
- Advancing a carbon-neutral, circular sustainable blue economy
What this means for APRIORA
Through its GIS-based risk assessment framework and open-source tool to identify which WWTPs most urgently need upgrading, APRIORA provides concrete, science‑based solutions to reduce micropollutant pollution in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond.
As a recognised Charter Action, APRIORA joins a growing European community of projects working toward the Mission’s 2030 goals. Our action will now be featured on the dedicated Mission Charter Actions website and included in Mission Ocean and Waters materials and tools. We also commit to the Mission’s shared principles: supporting the EU Ocean knowledge system under FAIR data principles, involving citizens in decision-making, stimulating public and private investment, and sharing knowledge with fellow Mission actors.
Why it matters
This recognition strengthens APRIORA’s visibility at EU level, opens opportunities to participate in major Mission fora and events, and highlights the importance of risk based, data driven approaches to reducing micropollutant pollution, especially as the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) encourages authorities across Europe to prioritise WWTP upgrades.
