Description
Jönshytteån, Säter, is a stream that flows between two inland lakes. There are trout in the stream. During the project the stream has been restored by volunteers. Spawning and rearing areas has been improved by loosening the gravel in the bottoms. In the area there are several sites of archaeological and historical interest and a hydroelectric dam, which has caused educative difficulties in the permitting process with County Administrative Board.
A Collaborative Approach to Stream Restoration in Jönshytteån
The Jönshytteån Learning Site, located within the Biosphere Reserve Nedre Dalälven, represents a nature-based approach to stream restoration that combines ecological improvements with environmental education and community engagement. The initiative focuses on enhancing freshwater habitats for brown trout and other aquatic species while creating opportunities for learning, knowledge exchange and public participation.
Restoring Habitat for Brown Trout
The restoration measures have been designed to improve habitat quality within the stream by recreating conditions that support natural ecological processes. Brown trout depend on clean, well-oxygenated gravel beds for spawning and juvenile development, but over time these habitats can become compacted by sediment and organic matter. Through manual restoration techniques, gravel beds have been loosened, stones repositioned and nursery habitats improved to create more favourable conditions for fish reproduction and survival.
The restoration work has been carried out using simple, low-impact methods that work with natural stream processes rather than relying on large-scale engineering interventions. Volunteers worked alongside experts from the County Administrative Board of Dalarna and Säter Fishery Conservation Association, demonstrating how practical nature-based solutions can contribute to ecosystem recovery while fostering a deeper understanding of freshwater environments.
Supporting Biodiversity and Ecosystem Resilience
Ecologically, the restored habitats are intended to support brown trout as well as a wider range of aquatic organisms. Improved spawning grounds, enhanced habitat diversity and more varied streambed structures create opportunities for fish, invertebrates and other freshwater species to thrive.
By restoring habitat complexity, the project aims to strengthen the ecological resilience of the stream and contribute to increased biodiversity over time. The close connection between the stream and its surrounding landscape has also been highlighted through educational activities focusing on riparian vegetation, shading, dead wood and the importance of diverse habitats for healthy freshwater ecosystems.
Monitoring Ecological Improvements
To evaluate the effects of the restoration measures, the site also serves as a platform for environmental monitoring and research.
Electrofishing surveys have been conducted to document fish populations and assess ecological conditions within the stream. In addition, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is being used to detect species presence and monitor changes in biodiversity through genetic traces found in water samples. Together, these methods provide valuable insights into how fish populations and freshwater ecosystems respond to restoration efforts over time.
Collaboration and Adaptive Planning
The development of the learning site has been shaped by dialogue and collaboration among a wide range of stakeholders. Existing networks involving authorities, municipalities, schools, universities and interest organisations were used to identify relevant participants and gather local knowledge.
Stakeholders were engaged through individual and group meetings conducted in both physical and digital formats. These dialogues helped to identify suitable locations for learning activities, inform restoration planning and broaden participation throughout the project.
A local reference group, consisting of representatives from organisations with different perspectives and areas of expertise, contributed directly to planning and decision-making processes. This collaborative approach enabled flexible and adaptive planning while ensuring that local knowledge, ecological considerations and community interests were incorporated throughout the project.
Key stakeholders included Hedemora Municipality, Upplandsstiftelsen, Mälaren Water Conservation Association, the Swedish Centre for Nature Interpretation at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the County Administrative Board, Sagån Water Council and the Federation of Swedish Farmers.
Balancing Ecological and Cultural Values
The restoration work required consultation with landowners, the local road association, hydropower operators and relevant authorities. Because the area contains cultural heritage remains associated with historic iron production, restoration plans were reviewed and approved by the County Administrative Board.
This process ensured that habitat improvements could be implemented while respecting cultural heritage, private interests and existing land uses, demonstrating how ecological restoration can be integrated with broader societal values.
Learning, Participation and Knowledge Exchange
The learning site serves as a platform for environmental education and public engagement. Through restoration days, stream walks, monitoring activities and educational events, volunteers, students and local residents have gained practical experience of stream ecology and nature-based solutions.
A total of 74 volunteers participated in activities along Jönshytteån, contributing directly to restoration measures while increasing their understanding of freshwater ecosystems. Educational events also highlighted how historical land use and human activities have shaped the stream, helping participants understand both environmental challenges and restoration opportunities.
Engaging Future Generations
Young people have played an important role in activities at the learning site. Hands-on restoration events have provided opportunities for participants to experience conservation work in practice and learn how relatively simple measures can contribute to healthier aquatic ecosystems.
By combining practical action with knowledge-sharing, the initiative helps inspire future environmental professionals, conservationists and community volunteers while strengthening public awareness of freshwater conservation.
A Living Example of Nature-Based Solutions
The Jönshytteån Learning Site represents a collaborative effort involving Biosphere Reserve Nedre Dalälven, the County Administrative Board of Dalarna, Säter Fishery Conservation Association, municipalities, universities, environmental organisations and local stakeholders.
By bringing together scientific knowledge, local expertise and practical restoration measures, the site demonstrates how nature-based solutions can restore freshwater ecosystems, support biodiversity and strengthen the relationship between people and nature. Through continued monitoring, learning and community involvement, Jönshytteån serves as a living example of how ecological restoration can generate both environmental and societal benefits.
