SchoolChanger: Transforming Learning Environments through Participation and Design

The development of the classroom Dimsalen at Axevalla Folk High School is part of the Interreg project SchoolChanger, where Axevalla acts as a pilot school. The project focuses on creating learning environments that support wellbeing, participation and meaningful learning.

The process began with an exhibition in August 2025, about the project and a survey in August-October 2025, involving in total 113 participants, teachers and staff. The aim was to understand how the current learning environment is experienced and to identify needs for improvement.

In November 2025, an international workshop was held at Axevalla Folk High School with participants from Finland, Poland and Estonia. During the workshop, project leader Lotten Svensson presented the survey results and the conceptual framework for relational learning and participant involvement.

Magdalena Svedlund from project partner PUUTS AB (Tibro, Sweden) led a design workshop where researchers and students collaboratively developed and presented prototypes and ideas for future learning environments.

Participants included students Błażej Łepkowski, Julia Jeżykowska, Martyna Krzyżańska and Adrianna Obarska, as well as researchers Ryann Deloso (Finland), Ghieth Alkhateeb (Estonia), Beata Fabisiak and Robert Klos (Poland).

Based on this work, the transformation of the Dimsalen has now begun. As a pilot environment, the space is being gradually redesigned through testing of materials, layouts and prototypes in practice. The aim is to create a flexible, safe and inclusive learning environment that reduces distractions while supporting focus, interaction and learning.

The images illustrate the process so far – from early ideas and prototypes to the ongoing transformation of the physical space. The first version of the redesigned Dimsalen, including initial prototypes, will be completed by the end of April.

The experiences and results from this pilot will be systematically evaluated and shared within the SchoolChanger partnership across the Baltic Sea region, contributing to the development of sustainable and transferable models for inclusive learning environments.
