Pilot 1. Disinfection efficiency of reclaimed water
03 September 2025
Pilot 1 Disinfection efficiency of reclaimed water focused on adapting and assessing the effectiveness of the disinfection stage in water reclamation. The primary objective was to develop science-based recommendations for optimizing disinfection processes after conventional wastewater treatment systems.
The main Pilot 1 stations were located at the following locations:
- Savonia University of Applied Sciences, Kuopio, Finland,
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Warsaw Poludnie, Warsaw, Poland.
Disinfection methods were also tested in other pilots in Poland, Latvia, and Denmark. Pilot operators were supported by researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology and the University of Latvia. The pilots looked at pretreatment methods prior to disinfection methods, such as coagulation, sand filtration, and activated carbon adsorption as well as comparing the efficiency of different disinfection methods, like chlorination, ozonation, and UV radiation. The key results are summarized in the Handbook, providing insights into the efficiency of each method in reducing contaminants and improving overall water quality.
