Methanol bunkering vessel specifications

07 May 2025
Technical details

The transition to hydrogen-derived fuels requires not only port infrastructure but also dedicated bunkering solutions. The H2Deri@BSP project supports this transition by defining the key characteristics of a methanol bunkering vessel, enabling ports to plan, design, and implement future-ready fuel supply operations.

From market demand to vessel concept

The deliverable combines market assessment and technical specification to define a viable bunkering solution for ports such as Klaipeda and across the Baltic Sea Region. Demand projections indicate a growing need for flexible bunkering capacity, driven by regulatory frameworks such as FuelEU Maritime and IMO net-zero targets.

Based on these insights, the study identifies an optimal vessel concept, such as a bunkering barge with a capacity of approximately 800–1,200 tonnes. It is expected to be capable of serving emerging methanol markets and scaling with future demand.

Technical overview: from concept to construction-ready design

The specification provides a comprehensive, construction-oriented design framework, covering all major vessel systems required for safe and efficient bunkering operations. This includes:

  • Main vessel particulars: dimensions, cargo capacity, stability criteria, and operational performance
  • Cargo and tank systems: methanol storage tanks, transfer pumps, piping systems, and ventilation/inerting solutions
  • Safety and control systems: emergency shutdown (ESD), gas detection, fire protection (including foam systems), and spill prevention measures
  • Operational systems: bunkering interfaces, hose handling equipment, monitoring systems, and communication protocols
  • Propulsion and manoeuvrability: thrusters, navigation systems, and onboard power generation to ensure precise and safe operations in port environments
  • Regulatory compliance: alignment with classification society rules, IMO requirements, and relevant EU regulations

The level of detail ranging from cargo handling systems to automation and emergency procedures. It demonstrates that the specification is not conceptual, but directly applicable for vessel design, procurement, and construction planning.

Enabling ports to move from concept to implementation

Beyond technical design, the specification serves as a practical foundation for procurement and investment decisions. It enables port authorities, such as Klaipeda, as well as other ports and logistics operators, to prepare construction-ready specifications for methanol bunkering vessels and integrate them into broader infrastructure planning.

By combining technical detail with market-driven insights, the deliverable supports ports in reducing uncertainty, aligning with regulations, and accelerating deployment of alternative fuel supply chains.
