Technical details

Biržai Aušra Basic School focuses on strengthening teamwork, classroom community and responsible energy-saving behaviour among students and teachers. Based on the results of a student survey, the pilot addresses challenges related to participation and cooperation as well as motivation and incentive structures. While students tend to remember to save energy at home, they often forget to do so at school. The pilot therefore aims to help students and teachers in two classes jointly adopt simple daily energy-saving habits, such as turning off lights and tablets after lessons. The school building was constructed in 1939, with a third floor added in 1957, and has a total area of 664 m².

Key aspects of the pilot:

  • Electricity detectives: Students will participate in a practical activity where they identify key locations related to electricity use and management. Two teachers will supervise the activities and jointly decide on the competition winners. The most engaged participants will receive recognition through an “Energy Champion” poster award.
  • Energy tracking challenge: Electricity consumption data from the two participating classes will be collected using smart meters. Students and teachers will meet twice per month to review the results, discuss progress and strengthen engagement through continuous feedback.
  • Daily routines and awareness-raising: During the pilot, simple daily and weekly routines will be introduced to encourage responsible energy use. One or two small student-led awareness campaigns will also be organised to promote energy-saving practices within the school community.

The pilot is conducted by Flip-EC project partner Biržai District Municipality Administration.
