🎥 July Drone Footage – Explore the PestSpace Experimental Field in Radostowo!

This summer, we took a look at the PestSpace experimental field at the Variety Testing Station in Radostowo from a whole new perspective – from high above!

Thanks to the valuable collaboration and support of our stakeholders – special thanks to the INVIGO team – we can show you firsthand how field research on faba bean varieties looks in practice.

What are we testing?

The field features 10 different faba bean varieties grown side by side to compare their characteristics within a single growing season.

What catches the eye in the video?

The two Finnish varieties – Louhi and Vire – clearly stand out:

  • They are distinctly shorter than the other varieties.
  • They produce smaller seeds and mature the fastest.

Louhi is particularly noticeable as the shortest, earliest, and lightest in color.

On the opposite side of each experimental strip…

You’ll find Granit, a Polish variety and the only determinate faba bean in this trial.

This means that:

  • Unlike indeterminate varieties that continue to grow indefinitely, Granit stops stem growth with a terminal inflorescence.
  • It sets pods mainly in the upper part of the plant.
  • Consequently, it has a shorter flowering period and matures significantly faster and more evenly.

What are we evaluating?

  • Yield Potential: The core metric for assessing economic value (we expect lower yields for the early Finnish varieties, but harvest results will tell the full story).
  • Disease Resistance: Regular health monitoring to identify which genetic backgrounds are more susceptible to specific pathogens.

Complete yield data will be gathered after harvest, which in Poland typically takes place in mid-August.

Why does this matter for the Baltic Sea Region?

We are running identical trials across the entire Baltic Sea Region (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland). This allows us to compare disease symptoms and agricultural performance of varieties with diverse genetic origins across different climate zones – delivering crucial insights for faba bean breeders and farmers alike.
