Promoting commercial fishing of Round Goby in the Baltic Sea

Final RoundGoby recommendations now online!

06 November 2026
After three years of work across seven Baltic Sea countries, the RoundGoby project has published its final recommendations. The guide, “Round goby in the Baltic Sea: from invasive species to valuable resource”, is now available to read and download on the project website.
Technical details

The publication tells the round goby story backwards, from plate to sea. It brings together what the project learned about consumer acceptance, food safety, processing, selective fishing gear, stocks and business models, and turns those findings into seven recommendations and a roadmap from the next twelve months through to long-term adaptive management.

The central message is that round goby has already proven itself on the plate. It is a lean, mild, protein-rich fish that consumers across demigraohics all around the Baltic Sea Region has enjoyed, from school and public kitchen meals to restaurant dishes, and the contaminant results sit well below EU thresholds. What holds it back is not the fish but the framework around it. Freezing and storage capacity, processing equipment, logistics and coordination between fishers, processors and buyers all need investment, and national rules that block the testing or adoption of selective gear need review. Commercial development also has to run alongside monitoring and management plans, so that creating value supports population control rather than working against it.

We have also produced a short project film that summarises the challenges and opportunities the project worked on, from fishing trials at sea to products reaching restaurant tables and public kitchens. Watch it here.

The RoundGoby project was financed by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme and brought together 15 partners from Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Germany.
