Machines and methods - CiNURGi at the Agricultural Machinery Trade Fair in Helsinki

15 October 2026
Solutions at the heart of the CiNURGi project attracted a great deal of attention at the Agricultural Machinery Trade Fair in Helsinki, Finland. The event, held at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Center on 8-10 October, drew nearly 19,000 visitors.
Technical details

CiNURGi results where well presented thanks to project partner, the Finnish Biocycle and Biogas Association, that had organized both a seminar and a stand at the Innovaatiotori (the Innovation Plaza) at the Trade Fair.

Nutrient flows under constant analysis

CiNURGi partners such as Br. Göransson from Sweden, one of the companies that has invested in new technological solutions for nutrient recycling under the project, were present at the stand to share their experiences with interested participants. Br. Göransson is one of two companies within the CiNURGi project that have tested near-infrared spectrometry (NIR) technology in their operations. The pilot activities they’ve worked with included attaching a NIR- meter to the slurry tanker the company uses for fertilizing fields. The idea was to get data on nitrogen measurements and emission during the spreading of liquid manure and digestate onto fields, to promote precision farming. The development process to complete this activity proved to be slow but now in the fall of 2026 the system is up and running. The calibration of the NIR-meter was one of the main challenges, as this particular way of using the sensor is still under development.

At the fair stand, CiNURGi partner Kuljetus Oy Tero Liukas, who has also piloted NIR technology in his business, presented a solution developed during the project: a new way to analyse nutrients while they are being transported. The Recycled Nutrients Data Flow combines an inline near-infrared (NIR) analyser with a data system, forming the RNF360 platform. It enables accurate, continuous data collection that can be tailored to the needs of different stakeholders, such as farms, biogas plants, the food industry, and environmental authorities.

All about nutrient recycling – a seminar

The CiNURGi partner, the Finnish Biocycle and Biogas Association, hosted a joint presentation to showcase the latest results in nutrient recycling. In collaboration with several projects, both past and present, the topic of nutrient recycling into fertilizers and biogas was comprehensively covered.
Drawing together results from projects like Lex4Bio, CiNURGi, Greenhood, TUKI, Ahti and Laadukas Biokierrätys the seminar presented on the agronomic value of recycled nutrient fertilizer products, the potential for nutrient recycling in Finland, possible safety concerns as well as producer perspectives from biogas plants and user-experiences from farmers. For three hours the presentations dove deep into the research results, sparking questions from the audience. Some results measuring harmful substances in recycled fertilizer products where still so fresh that they highlighted well the continued need for further research on topics such as PFAS and microplastics in any circular economy.

Biogas takes centre stage: optimism tempered by policy hurdles

On the last day of the fair, Saturday, the spotlight turned to biogas. The leading biogas expert from the Finnish Biocycle and Biogas Association, Anna Virolainen-Hynnä, joined a panel discussing the future of biogas as a source of both energy and fertilizers. All panelists were optimistic about where the sector is heading but expressed that there are still obstacles remaining in governance at both EU and national levels.
