SmartAging Podcast #33 - The Missing Layer
26 October 2026
In this episode, Pinar Metin Hagström explores why meaning is the first thing stripped out of elder care environments, and how design can bring it back. She introduces a way of understanding spaces on three levels at once: what the body feels on entering, whether the place works day to day, and what it means to the people inside it. Pinar also reflects on the hidden trade-offs behind functional choices such as easy-to-clean floors, safe lighting and open acoustics, and argues for briefs built around the key situations a place must support, not only the rooms it must contain. The result is care environments where residents feel like people rather than patients, staff enjoy their workday, and visiting families leave with a positive feeling about the place.
