NURSECOAST-II moves towards the end of its journey

Bringing together researchers, municipalities, wastewater utilities and other stakeholders, the final conference provided an opportunity to present the project’s results, exchange experiences and discuss the future of sustainable wastewater management in small-scale and tourism-affected areas.

The programme reflected the broad scope of NURSECOAST-II. Presentations covered the mapping of small wastewater treatment plants and policy recommendations, innovative pilot technologies such as nanobubbles and constructed wetlands, life-cycle and risk assessment, business models, and good practices for managing wastewater flows affected by seasonal tourism. Participants also heard directly from municipalities and coastal communities about the practical challenges they face during the tourism season.

A key part of the day was the co-creation workshop, which brought partners and participants together to discuss future initiatives for water and wastewater management. The discussions highlighted the importance of continued cooperation, knowledge exchange and practical solutions that can be adapted to the diverse coastal conditions across the Baltic Sea Region.

NURSECOAST-II has brought together 16 partner organisations from eight Baltic Sea Region countries. Since its launch in January 2023, the project has worked to address the seasonal increase in wastewater generation and nutrient discharges in coastal tourist areas, including through six pilot solutions, data collection, technology assessment, environmental analysis and the development of tools and recommendations for local authorities and other stakeholders.

The final conference was therefore not only a moment to look back at what has been achieved, but also to look ahead. The knowledge, partnerships and practical solutions developed through NURSECOAST-II provide a foundation for continued work towards more resilient and sustainable wastewater management in the Baltic Sea Region.

With the project coming to an end, we thank all partners, associated organisations, experts and stakeholders who contributed their knowledge, experience and commitment throughout the project.
