Technical details

Our Project Partner Stockhom Business Region has published a deep diving report on Stokcholm’s position as a leading digital and creative hub, with – aligning with the REAVES objective – a particular focus on the music, film, and video game industries. The report Stockholm as a Leading Digital Creative Hub highlights Stockholm’s pivotal role in Sweden’s creative economy. Together, these sectors comprise 5,955 companies, over 20,000 employees, and 201 billion SEK in turnover, with 51% of Sweden’s creative industry companies based in the Stockholm region. Sweden is the EU’s only net music exporter and the world’s third-largest, while the video game industry contributes roughly 3% of Sweden’s service exports. The film sector has nearly doubled its turnover since 2015, driven by rising production and international demand.

The report is part of the EU-funded REAVES project, which aims to connect fragmented digital creative industries by breaking down silos across sectors, regions, and organizations. By building on insights from 22 previous EU initiatives, REAVES seeks to develop a shared platform that strengthens innovation and entrepreneurship, directly aligning with the report’s focus on cross-sector collaboration and ecosystem development.

All three industries share digital-first, IP-driven business models that enable global scalability. They converge through technology—AI, visualization, and immersive tools like VR/AR—blurring traditional boundaries. Financial interdependence is growing, particularly via music synchronization in film and games, which boosts streaming demand. Digital distribution platforms (YouTube, TikTok) and global collaboration are reshaping business models, while IP protection in the AI era remains a critical challenge. A shared need for cross-sector expertise (e.g., animators working across games and film) and innovation support unites them.

Despite these commonalities, each sector has distinct traits. Music is highly fragmented, with 110,000 creators and tech giants like Spotify and Epidemic Sound driving global change. Film stands out for its rapid growth, fueled by increased production and international co-productions. Video games lead in technological innovation, with game engines and visualization techniques often adopted by film and music. The sector’s productivity outpaces the broader economy, reinforcing its role as a key export engine.

In summary, Stockholm’s creative industries thrive on digital convergence, global reach, and IP-driven growth, yet each retains unique strengths—music’s cultural export power, film’s production boom, and games’ tech leadership—that collectively solidify the region’s competitive edge.
