Regenerative Tourism in Baltic Sea Region for Resilient Communities towards a Circular Economy
REDIRECT

The REDIRECT Impact Calculator enters the pilot

Technical details

One of the practical outputs of the REDIRECT project is the REDIRECT Impact Calculator – a digital tool designed to support the project’s ambition of making regenerative tourism more understandable, measurable and actionable.

The calculator is currently being tested as part of the REDIRECT pilot activities taking place across the Baltic Sea Region. Feedback gathered during the pilot will contribute to the further development and refinement of both the calculator and the wider REDIRECT Toolkit.

A tool for reflection and learning

The REDIRECT Impact Calculator has been developed to support different stakeholder groups involved in tourism, including visitors, tourism businesses and destination management organisations.

By answering a series of questions, users are encouraged to reflect on how tourism can contribute positively to destinations – environmentally, socially, culturally and economically. Rather than serving as a certification or audit, the calculator is intended as a learning tool that promotes dialogue, awareness and continuous improvement.

Supporting regenerative tourism in practice

Regenerative tourism goes beyond minimising negative impacts. It seeks to create positive value for destinations by strengthening local communities, protecting natural environments, supporting cultural heritage and encouraging collaboration between visitors and host communities.

The REDIRECT Impact Calculator helps translate these principles into practice by providing a structured framework for reflection and evaluation.

Part of the REDIRECT Toolkit

The calculator is one of several practical tools developed within the REDIRECT project to support destinations in their transition towards regenerative tourism. Together with the REDIRECT Step-by-Step Guide, Governance Checklist and Regenerative Savoir Vivre, it contributes to a practical toolkit that helps destinations test, evaluate and further develop regenerative approaches in real-life settings.

The REDIRECT partners are currently piloting the calculator across the Baltic Sea Region, and experiences from these pilots will help shape the final version of the toolkit.

How to access the REDIRECT Impact Calculator

The REDIRECT Impact Calculator has been developed as part of the REDIRECT project to help visitors, tourism businesses and destination organisations reflect on and assess their contribution to regenerative tourism.

The calculator can be accessed here: https://redirectregenerativetourism.eu/

This online calculator offers two separate assessments:

Visitor – for travellers who wish to reflect on how their choices and behaviour contribute to regenerative tourism.

Organisation – for tourism businesses and destination organisations that want to evaluate their regenerative practices and identify opportunities for further development.

The organisation assessment consists of four sections:

  • Part I – Organisation Profile
  • Part II – Regenerative Practices
  • Part III – Perceived Results and Impact
  • Part IV – Challenges and Opportunities

Completing the assessment typically takes 7-10 minutes.

Once completed, users receive a Regenerative Tourism Score, allowing them to compare their results with other participants across the Baltic Sea Region. The calculator also provides practical recommendations for improvement, and a personalised summary report can be downloaded as a PDF.

The REDIRECT Impact Calculator is designed as a learning and development tool. Rather than measuring compliance, it encourages reflection, supports continuous improvement, and helps users understand how tourism can create positive environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts for destinations.
