Floating islands and hands-on learning in Słowiński National Park

In May 2026, partners at Słowiński National Park took an important step in strengthening water management and wetland restoration within the Supported by Nature project. At the learning site in the Słowiński Biosphere Reserve, floating islands were installed to support natural water purification processes by capturing nutrients in drainage channels.

These floating islands are a practical example of nature-based solutions (NBS) in action. By combining vegetation and natural processes, they help improve water quality while also creating habitats for aquatic species.

The installation was carried out as part of a field-based learning activity, bringing together participants for an educational experience in the landscape. Despite rainy weather, the conditions proved ideal for wetlands – and for learning.

During a guided walk around the site, participants had the opportunity to:

• observe the installation process up close
• explore how the floating island structures are built, including the plant mats
• take water quality measurements at different points
• engage in discussions and ask questions directly on site

The workshops provided a hands-on understanding of how wetlands function and how targeted interventions can strengthen their ecological role. Discussions also highlighted the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems – both for local communities and for the health of the Baltic Sea.

The activities were highly appreciated by participants and demonstrate how learning sites can serve as platforms for knowledge exchange, engagement and practical solutions for sustainable water management.
