Inside the New “Dimsalen” at Axevalla Folk High School

An enhanced learning environment has been inaugurated at Axevalla Folk High School as part of the #schoolchanger project. The classroom “Dimsalen” in the school building has been refurbished based on identified needs gathered from participants, teachers, and staff.

A workshop involving design students and researchers from Poland, Finland, and Estonia was held in November to further develop the ideas and proposals that emerged from the needs assessment.

What changed?

  • Fresh paint and wall-to-wall carpeting for a calmer atmosphere
  • Renovated tables and a variety of chairs to support different needs
  • Installed prototypes: booths, mobile whiteboards, moss panels, a lowered ceiling with integrated design elements, curtains, and a teacher’s desk with turned legs

SchoolChanger project partner – Puuts, represented by Magdalena Svedlund, was engaged in the manufacturing of the prototypes.

At the inauguration, the school was visited by its board, the project steering group (including representatives from Skara and Skövde municipalities), as well as Haparanda Folkhögskola and Karlsborg municipality. Participants and staff at the school have begun testing the features and experiencing the new environment. The work now continues with ongoing testing and evaluation of the prototypes, which will run until autumn to allow for further modifications and adjustments.

We are excited to know, that also other municipalities, like Skara and Skövde municipality are interested in testing those ideas.

Lotten Svensson, project manager for Axevalla Folk High School in Sweden highlights:

“Through this work, we contribute to improved learning environments with the goal that everyone can participate in teaching within the same classroom. The aim is to increase accessibility, create a calm and focused atmosphere, support learning capacity, and provide a positive working environment for both teachers and students/participants.

I am proud to serve as the project manager for this initiative and excited to see how these changes support better learning for all.”
