Circular Ports meeting in Lappeenranta highlighted pilot progress

01 April 2026
Circular Ports partners came together in Lappeenranta, Finland, on 25 March 2026 to mark an important transition point in the project, moving from developing concepts to testing concrete solutions in port environments. The meeting was hosted by the City of Lappeenranta and gathered partners from across the Baltic Sea Region.
Technical details

Over the course of the day, partners revisited the main results of Work Package 1 and explored how these outputs will support the next phase of the project. The methodology for circular economy data collection and the regulatory sandbox framework provide a shared foundation for piloting and evaluating solutions in real-life port settings.

A central part of the meeting was dedicated to the project’s pilot cases. Partners shared updates on their ongoing work, discussed challenges and opportunities, and aligned their plans for the upcoming implementation phase.

The pilots themselves highlight the wide range of circular solutions being developed in port environments. These include the reuse of secondary materials in port construction, improving the recycling of ship-generated waste, developing circular recovery solutions for bulk handling residues, and exploring industrial symbiosis between companies operating in port areas. Together, the pilots demonstrate how circular economy approaches can be applied in practice across different port contexts.

The discussions also looked ahead. The upcoming Circular Economy Toolbox will bring together lessons learned from the pilots and support ports in applying circular solutions in their own contexts. At the same time, partners aligned on timelines, deliverables and collaboration practices for the next phase of the project.

Several project outputs, including pilot reports and other key materials, are now available on the Circular Ports website under the Solutions section. These outputs offer a closer look at the pilots and the work carried out in Circular Ports.
