Strong International Collaboration – Partner Study Visit
31 March 2026
During the visit, Maksymilian Nowak had the opportunity to discuss research progress, exchange experiences with partners, and familiarize himself with the infrastructure and equipment used at the Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences.
PestSpace brings together research institutions and universities from Estonia, Latvia, Finland, and Poland, combining diverse expertise to strengthen international collaboration in plant pathology and breeding.
Advancing Research Methods (WP1)
Within Work Package 1 (WP1), partners are collaboratively refining research methods, including:
• Cultivation of pathogenic fungi under laboratory conditions
• Plant infection in fitotron chambers
• DNA extraction, PCR reactions, and sequencing of fungi present in infected plant tissues
These activities are carried out by Institute of Plant Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Warsaw, in active cooperation with partners from University of Tartu and Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and all institutions providing samples for analysis.
Study Visit Outcomes
During the visit, samples obtained from fitotron chambers were handed over to University of Warsaw partners for further analysis. Training for a member of the IGP PAS team was also scheduled.
A series of follow-up experiments in controlled fitotron conditions has been planned. Research is progressing dynamically, although each stage requires careful effort to refine new methodologies. In many cases, parallel approaches are tested to identify the most efficient and promising solutions.
Strength Through Cooperation
The strength of PestSpace lies in the collaboration, exchange of experiences, and integration of competencies across multiple research institutions. This cooperative approach is key to the project’s success.
