Climate-Friendly Christmas Workshop Inspires Sustainable Holiday Practices in Bergedorf
16 December 2025
As part of BALTIPLAST, the team behind Plastic-Free City (KuBuS e.V.) once again partnered with the Bergedorf Borough Office (Bezirksamt Bergedorf) to deliver an interactive and inspiring workshop—this time dedicated to Climate-Friendly Christmas.
Held on 4 December, the workshop brought municipal staff together during a season traditionally marked by high consumption and waste. The session aimed to spark new perspectives on how the festive period can be celebrated more sustainably, both at work and at home.
To introduce the principles of circular economy in a hands-on way, participants took part in a “Schrottwichteln” activity—an upcycling gift exchange that demonstrated how meaningful presents do not need to be newly purchased. This playful format encouraged reflection on resource use, waste reduction, and the creative potential of reusing what we already have.
A climate-themed Christmas quiz added an interactive learning element, covering topics such as plastic prevention during the holidays. Participants explored how plastic consumption increases around Christmas—from food packaging and gift wrap to artificial Christmas trees and paraffin-based candles—and discussed practical alternatives that can significantly reduce environmental impact.
A key focus of the workshop was sustainability communication in private settings. Together, participants examined why conversations about climate action can feel particularly challenging during family gatherings and festive traditions. The group reflected on how expectations, habits, and emotional attachment to rituals shape these interactions. Through guided dialogue, they explored strategies for constructive, empathetic communication and considered how gentle shifts in “visual expectations” around long-held traditions can help make sustainable choices feel natural rather than disruptive.
The workshop once again demonstrated how BALTIPLAST and its partners are using collaborative and engaging approaches to empower both individuals and institutions to reduce single-use plastics and make climate-friendly decisions—especially during moments of the year when consumption peaks.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Maike Hesse and Katinka Mustelin from the Bergedorf district, under the leadership of Michaela Graf-Krumnow, for their continued commitment and partnership.
