Biolat’s turning trees into treasure: how CEforestry unlocks high-value bioactives from forest side streams
This presentation showcases how Latvian biotech company Biolat is transforming forestry side streams into real market value within the Interreg Baltic Sea Region project CEforestry (2023–2025). Instead of treating sawmill residues such as bark, sawdust, cones and needles as low-value waste or fuel, Biolat uses green extraction technologies to convert them into high-value bioactive ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. The talk explains the scale of the available resource, the economic and environmental case for local biorefineries, and Biolat’s role in mapping market demand, identifying regulatory and technological barriers, and designing scalable business concepts based on co-located extraction hubs. Drawing on case studies like conifer-based health drinks, it distils practical lessons for SMEs: how to partner with research and brands, de-risk technology, navigate certifications and build a compelling “upcycled sidestream” story, while also outlining what kind of policy support and investment models are needed to unlock a truly circular forest bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea Region.
