Tartu pilot
17 November 2025
On November 4, 2025, Tartu team piloted the use of drones to deliver safety alerts along the Emajõgi River in the city of Tartu. During the pilot flights, both voice and light warnings were demonstrated, featuring various spoken messages and emergency sirens.
The purpose of the pilot flights was to evaluate how well drone-based alerts can be seen and heard in an urban environment, as well as how people respond to them. In addition, several technological solutions were showcased to the public, including an automated drone dock and drone detection devices.
These test flights help to better understand how drone-based warning systems could support rapid public notification in the future—for example, during accidents or emergency situations. The experience gained from the pilot flights will allow the city’s crisis management specialists to plan and develop more effective communication and alerting strategies. Among those observing the drone trials was Aleksandr Iljin, Head of the South Rescue Centre’s Field Units. The tests were carried out in cooperation with the Droon.ee team.
