05 November 2025
BALTFLOODS Project proudly participated as a panelist in the European Commission’s Education for Climate Day 2025, held on 23 October under the theme “Learning to Prepare”. This annual event brought together over 1,400 online participants and continued to attract 500 additional views of the recording in the past week, highlighting the growing importance of climate education across Europe.
The event served as a platform for educators, policymakers, and innovators to explore how education can foster resilience and preparedness in the face of climate change. Sessions ranged from global policy lessons to community-driven initiatives, youth-led projects, and innovative green education practices. Special attention was given to the EU Preparedness Union Strategy, emphasizing education’s role in building climate-ready societies.
As part of the panel “Community Action for Future-Ready Learners”, Rozabela Singh, Project Planner for BALTFLOODS, shared insights on City of Lappeenranta’s climate resilience journey and the project’s citizen-centered approach. This strategy involves municipalities co-designing public services with residents and integrating citizen science to strengthen flood resilience. Singh highlighted how engaging students, schools, and communities in hands-on climate action fosters ownership and practical solutions to environmental challenges.
BALTFLOODS, co-funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region, focuses on improving flood preparedness and reducing stormwater pollution through advanced monitoring technologies and community engagement. By leveraging transnational cooperation and digital solutions, the project aims to create safer, more sustainable urban environments across the Baltic Sea region.
This participation at EU wide events underscores City of Lappeenranta’s leadership in climate innovation and the city’s commitment to empowering citizens and educational institutions in the green transition.
