Technical details

On 19–20 May 2025, Helsinki became the hub for innovation and collaboration as the HAZGONE project platform kicked off its mission to address hazardous substances (HS) across the Baltic Sea Region.

The two-day event brought together municipalities, water experts, SMEs, and policy influencers with one shared goal: to move upstream and prevent pollution before it starts.

Why does this matter?
Hazardous substances and micropollutants pose growing challenges for water quality, health, and ecosystems. HAZGONE aims to connect upstream and downstream solutions, pool resources, and ensure that project outcomes shape future policies—including the forthcoming Regional Action Plan on HS.

Highlights from the Kick-Off:

  • Building the Upstream HUB: Expanding the Baltic Smart Water Hub to include prevention-focused content, good practices, and training modules.
  • Common Language, Stronger Action: Developing shared definitions for hazardous substances and micropollutants to break down silos.
  • Policy Meets Practice: Mapping solutions that link chemical management, water strategies, circular economy, and climate goals.

“We cannot focus only on treatment measures—prevention is key, and municipalities are crucial players,” was a central message echoed by participants.

The HAZGONE platform is set to become a knowledge powerhouse, offering tools, training, and innovative solutions for everyone from regulators to industries and local communities.

Stay tuned—this is just the beginning of a journey toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Baltic Sea Region.
