Celebrating Interreg Cooperation Day and European Mobility Week with active steps across the Baltic Sea Region
Technical details

This September, residents from across the Baltic Sea Region once again took part in Active Mobility Bingo – a fun but impactful campaign under the SUMPs for BSR project. Organised to celebrate both Interreg Cooperation Day 2025 and European Mobility Week (EMW), the initiative invited people to discover their cities through walking, cycling, and other sustainable ways of moving.

A playful challenge with real impact

Unlike last year’s photo competition, this edition introduced a set of active mobility tasks that participants could complete while exploring their cities and surroundings. Families, students, and active citizens joined the challenge, capturing their journeys in vivid photos. From sea shores and riversides to bridges, museums, stadiums, gyms, parks, street art, sunrises and city landmarks, the images revealed how diverse and inspiring active mobility can be.

In total, more than 20 participants across the participating cities joined the campaign, with the highest engagement seen in Panevėžys and  Gdynia. The new format created deeper involvement and more interesting participation.

Winners across the region

Each participating city – Turku, Gävle, Greifswald, Panevėžys, Cēsis, Gdynia, and the whole of Estonia – selected its own winners. The project provided sustainable thermos bottles for all winners, while some cities awarded additional prizes, such as scooters for the most outstanding entries.

In Panevėžys, the campaign culminated in an award ceremony, where winners were celebrated alongside school students who had taken part in a school mobility initiative. One story stood out in particular: a young girl from a participating family was recognised as the main winner in Panevėžys, which captured the campaign’s spirit of inspiration and inclusion.

Beyond prizes: building a culture of active mobility

The Active Mobility Bingo once again highlighted that walking and cycling are not only healthy and climate-friendly, but also joyful ways to connect with our surroundings. By linking the campaign with European Mobility Week activities, the project reinforces the value of sustainable urban mobility in everyday life.

What’s next?

The SUMPs for BSR project team is already looking ahead to next year’s Interreg Cooperation Day and European Mobility Week. With the continued support of cities, the aim is to make the campaign even more engaging, creative, and widely shared across the region.
