From 3–5 June, Barbara Massalska-Duszczyk represented the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology at the Nordic Hydrology Conference 2025 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The conference, held every two years, is a vital platform for the Nordic and Baltic hydrological community to share ideas and research on pressing water management issues – this year with a strong focus on climate change and water resource adaptation.

Barbara presented a poster on behalf of the TRUST ALUM project, highlighting the early results of a groundbreaking aluminum treatment conducted at Lake Velnezers in Riga. Titled “The restoration of an urban eutrophic lake – preliminary results of the first aluminum treatment in the Baltic States”, the presentation captured attention for both its innovative approach and cross-border collaboration with partners from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Vattenresurs Sverige AB.

The poster showcased how internal phosphorus loading – one of the key obstacles to restoring the lake – was tackled through targeted aluminum dosing, resulting in early signs of improved water quality. TRUST ALUM’s success story contributes not only to local environmental goals, but also to the broader hydrological dialogue across the region.
