CiNURGi participating in joint statement in EU Bioeconomy Strategy consultation

23 June 2025
The European Commission has opened a consultation on its Bioeconomy strategy to which a joint statement, coordinated by EUSBSR PA Nutri, has been prepared.
Technical details

CiNURGi is participating in the joint statement in the hopes of impacting the strategy’s aims on circularity and sustainability, all aspects the strategy hopes to reinforce. The new Bioeconomy Strategy is due for adoption by the end of 2025.

Project leads Cheryl Cordeiro and Erik Sindhöj summarize: “CiNURGi has four recommendations to the strategy:

  1. Strengthen Linkages Between Circular Bioeconomy and Water Policy. A modest expansion of the Strategy to reflect the role of water-related directives may help ensure policy coherence and further support bio-based innovation in water-intensive sectors.
  2. Support Bio-Based Fertilizer (BBF) Development and Uptake. The Strategy may wish to highlight BBFs as a key product category within the bioeconomy, potentially linking to the EU Fertilising Products Regulation and supporting investment in quality standards, traceability, and user acceptance mechanisms.
  3. Encourage Regional Circular Markets and Redistribution. Regional imbalances in nutrient flows remain a challenge, particularly in livestock dense areas. Fertilizer alternatives produced from local biomass streams can address both surplus and deficit conditions when coupled with appropriate processing and distribution infrastructure. The Strategy could further encourage mechanisms that facilitate cross-regional nutrient circulation and support the development of market-ready circular bioeconomy infrastructures.
  4. Understand End-User Preferences and Behaviour. The Strategy might benefit from including guidance or support for co-development processes involving producers, end users, and local advisors, ensuring innovations are fit-for purpose and broadly accepted.”
