United for a Plastic-Free Baltic: 5th BALTIPLAST General Assembly Takes Place in Kaunas
04 June 2025
At the end of May, our partners from across the Baltic Sea Region gathered in Kaunas, Lithuania, for the 5th BALTIPLAST General Assembly—a key milestone in the shared mission to reduce single-use plastics and move toward a more circular economy.
Hosted at the Science and Innovation Promotion Centre – Science Island, the two-day event brought together representatives from more than 18 partner organizations under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme BALTIPLAST. The focus: turning ideas into actions through tested solutions and shared expertise.
From Strategy to Solutions
The first day opened with a project overview by the lead partner, followed by a series of practical and inspiring presentations. Highlights included:
- Strategic Tools for Municipalities – Frameworks to guide local and national regulations for plastic prevention.
- Behavioral Change Measures – Tools and initiatives for schools, businesses, and communities to reduce plastic use.
- Technological Solutions – A decision-making tool to improve sorting of post-consumer plastics and strengthen recycling.
- Household-Level Action – Featuring the “BaltiPlast(ic) Diet,” designed to help households cut down on plastic waste.
- Environmental Impact Assessments – Real-world data from pilot projects testing the feasibility and impact of these solutions.
Innovation in Learning and Collaboration
One of the highlights was a live walkthrough of the BALTIPLAST Plastic Waste Management Platform—an interactive resource aimed at equipping municipalities and public service providers with knowledge and tools for plastic waste reduction. The session sparked lively discussion about how to best share project results and reach broader audiences during the final year.
Planning Ahead: Enuring Durability of Results
Day two shifted the focus to public engagement and future planning. Partners shared the outcomes of the BALTIPLAST awareness raising campaign and began mapping out local action days, which will take place across the region in the coming months.
The assembly closed with a rich exchange of ideas on how to disseminate and replicate project results beyond the original pilot areas. Partners presented best practices and creative plans for events that will help others adopt and adapt the BALTIPLAST solutions in their own contexts. “This is more than a meeting—it’s a vibrant exchange of ideas and solutions shaping a more sustainable future,” the event organizers noted.
With strong momentum and clear goals, the BALTIPLAST network is moving confidently into its final project year—driven by innovation, cooperation, and a shared vision of a cleaner Baltic Sea.
