Piloting of the Digital E-Navigation Services Started in Finland

30 April 2025
Technical details

The MaDaMe project has reached its halfway point. Over the past year and a half, the project partners have been developing the Digital VTS Traffic Clearance Service, the Digital Navigational Warning Service, and the Digital Aids to Navigation (AtoN) Service, as well as the technical means to deliver them securely to end users. All three services are now ready for testing activities in Finland, and the piloting has officially begun!

The first phase of the piloting was a three-day simulator testing held in April at the Aboa Mare bridge simulator environment in Turku, Finland. The goal was to test the functionality of the developed services, assess data transfer and visualization on the Electronic Chart Display System (ECS), and collect initial user feedback from participating seafarers and VTS operators.

The simulator pilot was a joint effort between the Finnish project partners: the services were developed by Fintraffic VTS and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA), and the S-100 compatible electronic chart software for visualizing the services was developed by Novia University of Applied Sciences. Test participants came from ESL Shipping, Finnpilot, and Fintraffic VTS. A big thank you to all participants for your active involvement and for sharing your insights into the future of digital services!

Piloting will continue in May aboard the Finnlines vessel Finnsirius, operating on the route between Naantali, Finland, and Kapellskär, Sweden. Stay tuned for more updates…
