Cleanup in Smiltene: A chance to connect and help shape the town you call home
22 April 2025
We want returnees to feel a sense of belonging, to see that they can get involved and help shape what is happening around them. A cleanup like this is a great setting for conversations, meeting new people, and doing something meaningful for the place you belong,” says Inga Madžule, Remigration coordinator at Vidzeme Planning Region.
The cleanup will take place at Jāņukalns, an open-air stage and gathering place that is currently being revitalized as one of the key priorities in Smiltene’s Cultural Pearl action plan. Once the work is done, participants will be treated to a live music program and a shared meal of soup cooked by volunteers—creating a relaxed atmosphere around the campfire for informal conversations and making new connections.
The restoration of the Jāņukalns open-air stage is one of Smiltene’s most important cultural and community engagement projects this year. It is being made possible through the enthusiasm, cooperation, and active participation of local residents. It’s a great example of how communities themselves can drive positive change in their towns.
The official opening of the restored stage is planned for June 1, featuring the charity event “White, White is My Heart”, a children’s song and dance festival, and the BSR Cultural Pearls Award Ceremony as part of the celebration program.
