ReNutriWater Team Visits Nosedo Wastewater Treatment Plant – A Model of Circular Water Solutions in Action

08 April 2025
The ReNutriWater team recently had the opportunity to visit the Nosedo wastewater treatment plant in Milan – and came away truly inspired.
Technical details

For over 20 years, the Nosedo plant has been a leading example of how treated wastewater can be effectively and safely reused to reclaim water for agricultural purposes, offering valuable insights for circular water solutions.

The visit included insightful presentations by Francesca Pizza from MILANO Integrated Water Service, covering the broader context of water reuse in the region, and by the Roggia Vettabbia consortium, which detailed the agricultural reuse of treated wastewater from the Nosedo plant across southern Milan’s countryside.

One of the key takeaways from the visit was understanding the broader conditions that have enabled the success of Milan’s water reuse model. These include the consistent delivery of high-quality water thanks to efficient processes and daily quality control, the year-round availability of this cost-effective resource, and the added value it brings to agriculture by improving crop yields and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. In winter, the water is directed to the river and wetlands. This has created an interesting park that is accessible to public. The existence of a historic irrigation canal network has also played an important role, alongside strong public engagement through education, research partnerships, and collaboration with non-profit organizations—all contributing to a positive public perception of water reuse.

The excursion highlighted how a well-organized collaboration between the treatment plant operator and the farmers’ organization can yield mutual benefits. This long-standing partnership not only supports sustainable agriculture but also demonstrates how reclaimed water can become a reliable and nourishing resource for local farming and residents.

The lessons and inspiration gained from Nosedo will undoubtedly support and enrich the ReNutriWater project’s ongoing work to promote sustainable and circular approaches in water reuse.
