Action Against Plastic Pollution in the Baltic Sea Region: BALTIPLAST General Assembly in Helsinki

11 December 2024
At the end of November 2024, the BALTIPLAST project convened its General Assembly Meeting in Helsinki, bringing together all our project partners from across the Baltic Sea Region. In two days of dynamic discussions and collaborative sessions, participants reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the critical issue of plastic pollution and shared strategies to protect the region’s unique marine environment.
Technical details

On the first day the event started with an inspiring opening by Helsinki’s Deputy Mayor, Anni Sinnemäki, and Prof. Walter Leal, who underscored the urgency of action against plastic pollution. Following the introduction, the assembly reviewed the project’s current status and outlined the ambitious goals for the coming year.

Highlights of the first day included cross-pilot discussions, where partners exchanged experiences on engaging diverse target groups and piloting solutions. Focus groups tackled thematic tasks ranging from technical innovations to behavioural shifts for households, municipalities, schools, and businesses. The discussions resulted in valuable insights into how our tailored solutions can impact the reduction of waste from single-use plastics. The last session of the day, focused on assessing outcomes from the project’s pilot initiatives. Partners mapped and presented findings, analyzed environmental impact of the different pilots, and explored how current progress aligns with broader strategic goals. The day concluded with a shared dinner, fostering connections and informal dialogue among participants.

On the second day of the events, the focus shifted to transferring solutions and results to key stakeholders. We explored strategies to ensure these innovative approaches are adopted, scaled, and sustained across the region. By creating actionable pathways for stakeholders, we are paving the way for long-term, tangible impact. Sessions on shaping our deliverables and planning local action days emphasized collaboration and innovation as cornerstones of BALTIPLAST’s approach.

By the meeting’s end, participants had defined clear next steps and reaffirmed their shared commitment to reducing plastic pollution through concrete actions and community engagement.

The General Assembly exemplified the collaborative spirit of the BALTIPLAST project, bringing together diverse perspectives to tackle a shared environmental challenge. As we move forward, the insights gained in Helsinki will support our efforts to empower communities, influence policy, and implement innovative solutions.

Stay tuned for updates on upcoming initiatives and how you can join us in protecting the Baltic Sea from plastic pollution!
