Mapping the municipality’s energy consumption, energy production and energy balance is a good starting point for a municipality that wants to draw up an energy plan. For this purpose, municipalities can use the tool developed in Energy Equilibrium.

One example from Tomelillla municipality in Sweden: If there are plans for expanding wind power, you can make a scenario with the tool that shows how the energy system is affected.

Ellen Boije af Gennäs Erre, business developer in Tomelilla municipality has tested the tool and sees several opportunities for Tomelilla municipality to use it.

“Partly I have used it when working with the municipality’s new master plan and for example, I will partly use it to explore what electrification of our vehicle fleet can mean when we draw up a new energy plan. A challenge with the tool is that there is a lot of data that needs to be collected.”

Ellen recommends that you have a clear purpose for using the tool, regardless of whether it is to do energy mapping or to create different scenarios for your municipality.

“I was surprised that there is so much available public information that could be used. It lowered the threshold of getting started with the tool. We could see that no new wind turbines have been installed in Tomelilla for a long time, which means that the existing ones are starting to reach the end of their useful lives. With the tool you can also see the potential for energy storage in a municipality.”
