Today, our Swedish partners from Vattenresurs visited Latvia to prepare for the upcoming lake treatment using the ALUM method at the pilot site, Lake Velnezers. The main purpose of the visit was to finalize plans and ensure everything is in place for this important project milestone.

During the visit, we explored the lake and held discussions with the Latvian logistics team, where we clarified responsibilities, equipment rentals, and developed the final agenda for the treatment week. Vattenresurs, our main partner responsible for the treatment, introduced a newly built, smaller boat designed specifically for this project to minimize impact on vegetation and facilitate transport. Representatives from the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, the lead partner of the project, and Riga Municipality, the lake owner provided last guidance on setting up equipment, managing logistics, and ensuring all preparations for the upcoming treatment were well-coordinated.

In just two weeks, we’ll witness the ALUM treatment at our pilot site, Lake Velnezers—a milestone for the TRUST ALUM project and a significant step forward for modern lake management in Latvia. While it’s another achievement for our experienced Swedish partners, it represents a major opportunity for Latvian lakes, and we hope it’s just the start of ALUM application here,” says the TRUST ALUM project manager Inta Dimanta-Deimantoviča.

We have agreed that the treatment equipment will arrive in Latvia on October 10th, with preparations—including road construction and vegetation clearing—taking place up to October 13th. The pretreatment phase will start on October 14th, ensuring optimal pH levels for the main treatment on October 15th and 16th.

During the treatment days, we invite the public to join us for an informative event with demonstrations, formal speeches, and more. There will be informative tent to answer all questions. The boat will return to Sweden on October 18th.
