The EU Organic Awards 2024 celebrated eight outstanding winners for their contributions to organic farming and sustainable practices. KISMET partners South Savo in Finland and Sörmland Bio-district in Sweden emerged as the highlights, showcasing exemplary initiatives in organic agriculture.
South Savo, awarded Best Organic Region, has fostered a robust organic farming culture over four decades, with 200 organic farms and a strong emphasis on preserving water quality and biodiversity. It is home to the Finnish Organic Research Institute, driving innovation and sustainability in the sector.
Sörmland Bio-district received the Best Organic Bio-district award for its pioneering role in organic farming since the 1940s. With 20% of its farmland dedicated to organic practices, Sörmland connects farms, food processors, and restaurants to promote local products and sustainable tourism. Jostein Hertwig from BERAS foundation:„This really inspires us to provide organic food in the area. Also, it offers a lifestyle that is attractive to young people and therefore secures our future.“
Both regions have benefitted from EU Interreg KISMET funding, enhancing cross-border cooperation and the organic sector’s growth. The EU Organic Awards, part of EU Organic Day, celebrate such achievements, spotlighting sustainable food systems across Europe.
