WaterSafe Tool Presented at Circular Economy Conference in Greece

19 September 2024
On September 13, 2024, ReNutriWater project partner Dominika Szołdrowska from the Institute of Mineral and Energy Economy Research (MEERI) presented the Water-Safe tool at the international conference "Circular Economy: the pathway towards a Sustainable Development" in Chania, Greece.
Technical details

Her presentation, titled “IT Tools for Optimising Water Reuse for a Supporting Transition to Circular Economy” focused on showcasing the tool being developed within the project. The tool is designed to enhance decision-making in the area of water reuse, thereby supporting the transition towards a circular economy.

WaterSafe is being developed in collaboration with several project partners and aims to assist European companies in the water and wastewater sector in reducing energy, material, and water costs. The tool has two core functions: providing a compendium of knowledge and assisting wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operators in selecting appropriate water recovery technologies.

The compendium will include comprehensive information on water treatment methods, potential applications for recovered water, and European legal regulations. It will also offer insights into the contaminants that can be removed by different methods, helping users understand the technologies currently in use. The tool is primarily designed for Baltic Sea countries and is based on European Union laws and standards.

To select the best technology, users will input specific wastewater parameters, such as nutrient content or salinity. These values will be compared with EU regulations, and the most suitable technology will be recommended. Data from pilot studies within the ReNutriWater project will further refine the tool, which will also provide initial cost estimations, potential benefits and risks, and tailored recommendations.

Ultimately, WaterSafe is intended to make decision-making easier and more efficient while fostering a transition to a circular economy by optimizing water reuse in alignment with EU regulations.
